WHO Raises Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Fewer than a tenth of patients who could benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy have access to them, states the global health agency as it publishes its initial guidance on the medications.

Given over a billion people worldwide currently obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, over two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong care," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to broad access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, notes the organization.

Despite the current most favorable scenario, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The guideline urges countries and companies to widen availability, via measures including voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Work

These medications imitate a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and enhance the sense of being full so people reduce food intake.

People usually start to lose weight in the initial weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Evidence suggests people may regain a significant portion a year later of stopping the medication, as their typical appetite return.

To be carrying excess weight raises your chance for experiencing diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity impacts people in countries worldwide and was linked to over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
