A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.
The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.
The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
