Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
